History of UBC

On the morning of the August 28th, 1955, 48 members of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church heeded God’s call to plant another church of like Faith and Order.  On that same evening, was organized as one of God’s true churches, a body of scripturally baptized believers, Christ being the Head of their called-out body.  Elder William E. Lee, a great crusader for Christ, read the Scripture Matthew 16:13-19, and after the four week charter period, UBC was organized with a total of 71 charter members.  Brother William E. Lee was called as Unity’s first pastor.

UBC met in those early days in the Irving School building for church services.  It wouldn’t be long, November 1955, until this thriving membership would purchase the land where UBC stands today at the corner of 18th Street and Chisholm Drive.  Construction on the first building began in January of 1956 and the first service in the new building was held on Wednesday night, May 2, 1956.  It would only take until 1964 for UBC to outgrow her facilities and need more room and on December 13, 1964, the church met for a ground breaking service and would later accept her new auditorium on April 4, 1965.  The latest addition, a multi-purpose building, would be completed in 1993.

Today, UBC stands as a light on a hill with a long history of serving the Lord through many varied ministries.  UBC has planted churches, supported missions and reached out to the people of Duncan as she does to this very day.  Though all but one of those charter members has gone home to be with the Lord, Unity Missionary Baptist Church continues to grow and serve the community where she lives.  Methods and ministries may have changed through the years, but the message of Jesus Christ and His sacrifice on the cross for our sins remains the same...and that will never change!
